Dear Parents,
As our upcoming in-house tournament approaches, I wanted to take a moment to share the bigger picture of why events like this matter so much to us—and to your children.
For many of our kids, this will be their first experience competing in a tournament setting. That can bring excitement, nerves, anticipation, and sometimes fear. And that’s exactly why it’s so valuable.
Learning to manage stress in a controlled, supportive environment is a life skill. Whether it’s a test at school, speaking in front of a class, a tough conversation, or a future challenge we can’t yet see—your child is practicing how to show up when things feel uncomfortable. Jiu-Jitsu gives them a safe place to feel pressure, work through it, and come out stronger on the other side.
Of course, winning feels great. We all celebrate it, and it’s something to be proud of. But just as important—if not more so—is learning how to handle losing.
Loss teaches humility.
Loss teaches resilience.
Loss teaches self-reflection and emotional control.
In Jiu-Jitsu, losing isn’t failure—it’s feedback. It’s a moment where a child learns that their effort still matters, that their value isn’t tied to the outcome, and that growth often comes from moments that don’t go our way. How they respond to a loss—how they shake hands, how they breathe, how they try again—is where real character is built.
Our goal for this tournament is not just medals. It’s confidence, courage, and perspective. We want every child to walk off the mat knowing they did something hard, something brave, and something meaningful—regardless of the result.
Your role as parents is incredibly powerful here. The words you use afterward, the tone you set, and the emphasis you place on effort over outcome will shape how your child remembers this experience. Celebrate their willingness to step on the mat. Celebrate their heart, their attitude, and their growth.
If they win—wonderful.
If they lose—even better.
Both outcomes are gifts.
Thank you for trusting us with your children and for supporting them through experiences that help shape who they become, not just as athletes, but as people.
We’re proud of every single one of them already.
Respectfully,
Professor Tony
